Atropine

Atropine is a highly toxic compound which occurs in Atropa belladonna, Datura stramonium, and other Solanaceae plants.

It has anticholinergic activity, causing blurred vision, suppressed salivation, vasodilation, excitement, and delirium, which is why it’s often found in ‘Witches Flying Ointments’.

Scopolamine

A type of ‘Tropane Alkaloid’

Scopolamine, is often found in members of the Solanaceae family and is often found in ‘Witches Flying Ointments’ and has been used widely to help prevent motion sickness.

Hyoscyamine

A type of ‘Tropane Alkaloid’

Hyoscyamine is a anticholinergic agent that can help with controlling gastric secretions, visceral spasm, hypermotility in spastic colitis, and abdominal cramps.

It is sometimes used in Parkinson’s medications to help control / reduce rigidity and tremors.

Tropane Alkaloids

Tropane Alkaloids including atropine, hyoscyamine, and scopolamine are highly toxic and found in the Solanaceae family.

Another plant family rich in tropanes is the Erythroxylaceae which includes Coca (Erythroxylaceae coca) the major source of cocaine.
